What is Hedging?
Hedging is taking a secondary position with the expressed purpose of counterbalancing a known risk involved with a primary position. This can be accomplished by taking positions in specifically related securities for specific risks or by purchasing index options for market risks.

One of the original forms of hedging took place when farmers would sell their crops in the futures markets in order to protect the crops current value before the crops were harvested.
